AGM vs EFB vs standard car batteries: which does your car need?

AGM, EFB and conventional car batteries compared in plain terms, with the replacement rule for start-stop cars and how to tell which one is fitted.

Fit the same battery technology the car left the factory with, or a higher one. A car built with an AGM battery must get an AGM replacement. A car built with EFB can take EFB or AGM. A conventional battery should not be fitted to a start-stop car, even if it is the right size.

How to tell which battery your car has

  • Read the label: AGM and EFB batteries are normally marked as such, often with "Start-Stop".
  • Check the dashboard: an A-in-a-circle button or an engine that switches off at junctions means a start-stop system.
  • Look for a small sensor clamped to the negative terminal. It indicates a battery-management system.
  • If the battery is in the boot or under a seat, it is often AGM, because sealed batteries are preferred inside the cabin.
  • Not sure? Send a photo of the label on WhatsApp and we will identify it.

Why downgrading causes problems

A start-stop car restarts its engine many times in one journey and runs the air conditioning, lights and screens from the battery while the engine is off. A conventional battery is not designed for that pattern. Fitted to such a car it tends to lose capacity quickly, the start-stop function may switch itself off, and warning messages can follow.

In Dubai the demand is higher still, because the air conditioning runs almost all year.

Registration after fitting

Many cars with a battery sensor need the new battery registered so the charging system knows its age, capacity and type. This applies to many BMW, MINI, Audi, Volkswagen and Land Rover models and to some Ford, Mazda, Volvo and Mercedes-Benz models. Changing from EFB to AGM, or to a different capacity, may also need coding. We check the requirement for your model before quoting.

Quick answers

If your situation is different, tell us what happened when you last tried to start the car.

Can I replace an AGM battery with a normal battery?

No. A car designed for AGM relies on its higher cycle life and charge acceptance. A conventional or EFB battery in its place is likely to fail early and can disable the start-stop system.

Can I upgrade from EFB to AGM?

Usually yes. AGM is the higher technology, so the upgrade is generally accepted, though some cars need the change coded into the battery-management system. Confirm for your exact model.

Do AGM batteries last longer in Dubai heat?

AGM batteries handle deep cycling and vibration better, but every lead-acid battery ages faster in sustained heat. Correct specification, a healthy charging system and regular use matter more than the label alone.
